A friend has a cheby 2500 series pick-up. He struck a deer last week and I am surprised at the amount of damage the truck has. It will need a complete front end from the fan forward. That big chrome bumper is just a plastic coated pop can. The left front fender was bent back into the door. The air bags did not deploy and I told him to disconnect the battery before he did anything to the truck. What I want to know is, will disconnecting the battery prevent the bags from blowing now and what sets the bags off. Where are the sensors that set the bags off?

 

The answer is "NO". Stactic electricity will set off air bags. I'm not sure on your truck but on my 06 Ram 1500 the sensors are in plain view if you go under the truck and look at the front bumper from behind. You can distinguish the air bag circuits because there yellow (both wires and clips). Hopes this helps a bit I only know a little about bags but I know just enough to tell you there pretty dangerous if you dont know what your doing. If you give me more specifics on your truck (year, eng, ect) I can get you instructions on how to disable the bags thru alldata.

I did find the sensor, it is mounted under the radiator support. This is on a 08 2500 HD pick-up. I found another yellow connector in front of the radiator but about half of whatever it was hooked to is somewhere inside Bambi. The battery is disconnected and there were two fuses associated with the air bag system and they have been removed. I just wanted to insure that the bags don't blow and add to the repair cost and/or hurt someone.

 

I assume you have the 6.0L gas not diesel, if so you are correct to pull the two fuses just be carefull working around any sensor or module pertaining to SIR (supplemental inflation restraint).
