1.8 HP starter shock absorbing clutch/drive - replacments?
 

I was planning to put a new drive in my starter which is the slightly larger 1.8HP unit. All aftermarket replacements listed for my application are of the solid variety and look like whats pictured below.

However, my starter seems to be equipped with a shock absorbent drive consisting of two sections. Apparently there should be rubber in it but, I don't see it in mine.

From what I understand I could switch to the solid drive but, I would also need to switch to a narrower shifting fork.

So, I either need a good source/part # for the shift fork or the shock absorbing clutch.

I'm curious as to why this drive/clutch isn't more readily available. Was it not around for very long or are re-manufacturer just choosing not to support it?

According to MTSC Volume 75-3, the rubber protects the flywheel and starter pinion teeth from backfiring... sounds like a better deal to me..

Sorry I dont have nothing to shoot your way. It has become cheeper and faster for me where i am at to out source these rebuilds.

I did some more searching. I was able to find a part number for that drive. 4094174 (STARTER CLUTCH W/ 4057940 FORK)

Which that number crosses over to the following:
2K1019
SD20
SD229

But if you lookup images for those parts they look like the first picture I posted in this thread for the solid drive.

So, I don't know. I think I'm going to try that drive... it will either work or it wont.

I could be these parts number have the wrong picture associated with them (generic/stock image)
Or the reman/aftermarket world knows the part will work
Or the reman/aftermarket world doesn't know or care there where different starters and different parts for those starters.

Guess I'll find out.

Well, I ordered the SD229 by BWD from O'Reilly, it is indeed the solid drive and the not flex one.

It doesn't fit. I'm not sure if it's the wrong part or because the spirals splines on my shaft look kinda chewed up but, I returned the part.

I found an old mopar part # for the shaft: 4091914

But, it doesn't crossover to anything.

NOS ones on ebay are $30+ so, its not even worth the trouble.

I got a reman starter which ended up being the slower 1.5HP unit. Its sounds a little lazy to me but, it seems to work fine.

I think next time I'll switch over to one of the later Japanese mini starters. Assuming their just a bolt-on job.

Lots of folks have gotten away from the slow gear reducted starter... I still use them.. Just have to have a good battery... :)

I got Away from the old starters in the very early 90s, I was having trouble getting descent starter drives. I put the same starters on that my new at the time Dakota had. All my Mopar drivers, shop truck and race car. Starter problems gone......☺

Sounds good. I'll definitely switch over to a mini starter next time.

While I was going through the rear brakes on my blue truck I decided to install a mini starter since I noticed 1.8 HP starter began to sometimes grind but, the flywheel teeth were intact.

Which is exactly same problem I had earlier with my red truck before I switch to the 1.5HP reman. I don't know, I think It has something to do with that flex drive. Either they were a bad design or the remanufacturers aren't rebuilding them correctly if at all, since you can't purchase that drive. That first one I took apart didn't even have any rubber in it, I wonder what I'll find in this second 1.8HP?

Anyway, the mini starter is everything I dreamed my engine starts so fast now, the sound will take some getting used to but, I'm sold.
