318 Revamping, need ideas
I just got a 92 Ramcharger with a 318, looking to make it perform as good as it can without tearing into the motor, what are some recommendations for this? Was thinking new plugs and wires, and maybe some other things, possibly MSD Box, what do you think?

The normal stuff like wires, headers, msd, etc and dual exhaust. I once had a '76 powerwagon with a 318. I put a set of 360 heads, a truck comp cam and a alum intake with a 500 4bl carter and used 360 exhaust manifolds. This upped the power considerably and i was surprized how much torque it made. just a idea if you decide to tear a little into the engine.

Is this a TBI (LA) or MPFI (magnum) motor?
The normal tune up parts are always a good start. There are multiple MSD ignition boxes out there that you can use, you just need to read up on each on and figure out what is best for you. Headers and a true dual exhuast will help the motor to breath better. |
That I don't know, Where would I look to find that information?

Just remove the air cleaner and see if the "carb" looks like it has two plastic injectors (one over each barrel). If it does, then is TBI (Throttle Body Injection). If not, it'll either look like a normal carb or a normal throttle body and have an injector per cylinder. TBI: Attachment 16756 |
Haha Thanks for the directions, I'll have to check it out. Although an issue arose today I'm hearing a metal clanking when I'm driving, so I'm gonna pull tires this weekend, and shake some stuff up, see if I can figure out where its coming from.

It is more than likely tbi. Like said earlier. new plugs, plug wires, filters and fluids, headers, If the cat converter is still on it you may want to get it gone. Otherwise you will need to get into the motor.

My 91 360 van was TBI, that should be what you have also unless ? You never know what the last owner did to it..MSD ign is overkill for a stock motor, You might want to look at the orange ign control box that Mopar offers. A good set of Champion plugs & 8mm wires. As to the catalic converter it depends on you state laws and weather they check. Federal law says it is a No No. to remove it. If it is partly plugged it will not allow the motor to breath, will kill the gas mileage. Maybe bump the ign timing up a few degrees to 10deg before TDC. If you replace the distributor cap make sure it is a tan one !! NOT the cheap black ones the discount stores sell..
