340

Can anybody tell me the hp of a 340 bored 20 over. And why are these engines so sought after. I have a 66 satellite with a 318 ploy engine. Ive had several people tell me the 340 will bolt right in and run good.

Frankly I think they are somewhat over-rated, and I used to have one.

The reason I say that is that you can get a LOT of torque and "street" power out of a 360, and they are easier to get. Only downside of the 360LA's is that they are "externally balanced" and need a special weighted torque converter, or a special aftermarket (off weighted) flex plate, and the oil pans do not interchange with the 273/318/340s

Don't get me wrong, 340s are great engines, but the "correct" restorers have driven the price up.

The 340 is IMHO, the HEMI of the small block world. It was only produced between 1968 to 1973. You could get it the A-Body and the E-Body ( B-Body? ) It was only in the high performance cars, EG: 'Cuda, Challenger R/T & T/A, various Dusters/Demons, Darts, and early Barracudas. It is a great performing motor, having a good balance of boar and stroke to make it a good reving motor as well. Can you make more power with a 360? Sure. Would I cry if I didn't have a 340 in my car? Nope. You can get a 318 to perform as well as a stock 340, and like was said above, 360s are still plentiful.

A stock 340 made 275 HP w/4bbl; 290HP with the 6 pack. In 73, it made 240 Net HP. If you get the CR and the right cam, headwork, intake, so forth and so on, you can get just as much, if not more, power from a well built 360. The old saying hold true...there's no replacement for displacement...

The 340 was rated 275Gross hp from 1968-1971, used a forged crank and 2.02in 1.60ex valves. 1972-1973 they were rated at 240 net HP,were externally balanced, used a cast crank and 1.88in 1.60ex valves. 340s were a no cost option over the 383-400 in the B(Road Runner & Super Bee/Ralley) body from 1971-1973.

That's right! I keep forgetting they made cars after '71
