Ok guys, whats the low down on the 400 ci engine. What can I do to it and is it anything worth spending money on ?
Thx

what do you want out of the motor? If its performance, I'd probably look around for a 383 or 440 instead. If its just to swap into a car to get moving and drive, then rebuild if it is needed and call it a day.

you can build the motor up to be quick
it still has decent size to it (400)

It's A No Brainer....

The 440 is the way to go...

Yes I ran the casting #'s, its a 400. I have heard of guys running a 440 crank in the 400 and ending up with something around a 466. Any thoughts ?

you can build it to be fast. do you already have a tranny and vehicle for it?

if you have an abody or light car they are the best wedge engines . they have the biggest bores short deck height so you can use lighter pistons & rods . which make them stronger & rev quicker , they use the same cranks as 383 so it's easy to get a budget forged crank . or you could use a forged 440 crank and turn down the mains . that is quite commen , all the common piston makers make pistons for that combo .( that makes a 451 cid ) if you have the money check out muscle motors or 44o source . com . yeah mate the 400 block is the way too go . all the best . dk

Thanks for the info deadkelly, cheers. Thanks for the reply Tim and Heather also. I found a 64 Polara in an old barn and it has the 400 already in it w/tranny and 8 3/4 rear. I'll post some pics shortly. Thanks again everyone, this site is great.

A 400 has such a thick wall you can rebuild it over and over again. It's a great block and you can make incredible HP with it if you know what you are doing.

Even if you don't use the block save it a racer will pay you good dollars for it. If you really don't want it I probably would buy it off of you.
