727 transmission swap
I have a 1971 dodge charger with a 440. Right now the transmission in it is a manual transmission that needs to be replaced. I am working on restoring the car, so I've decided to put a 727 automatic in it, because thats what the car started with. I can get a 727 automatic transmission from a dodge 1 ton van. If i get the transmission from the van will i be able to use it on my charger?

I'm located in alaska. The transmission from the van is $600, and it works so i'm not looking to buy it and tear it apart, unless it would be something that would be pretty effective. I understand it may be difficult, but time is something i have the luxury of having. I want this transmission to work well for a long time. I was mostly curious if these transmissions were interchangable, are there different model numbers?

600$ for a stocker-transmission is UNsane. I am selling myself a HP trans for a B-engine that has a manual shift valve body AND a high-stall converter for 550$. I am talking to a guy HERE on this group right now ... he has the first "rights" to it.
Do you have any older junkyards around in your area?

Do you know any other vehicles that use the 727-B transmission? also are there other transmissions that could be built to work with my engine. I kind of like the idea of learning to rebuild the transmission. It would make it a little easier in narrowing down my search.

Another note on these "cores". A Bud of mine bought a core some years back that was full of burnt fluid ... and the filter had been plugged. This trans that he needed was for a daily driver and I told him just to change the filter ...and run two changes of ATF through it.
With a little line-pressure adjustment ... that thing shifted almost like a HP trans !

Ok, so with a little bit of work yesterday, I managed to find an old 70 something (I'll know more at the end of today) Chrysler. It has a 318 with a 727. I know that the 318 is the comes with the 727 A transmission whereas I need the B transmission, however he'll give me the whole car for $50. Apparantly is was a good car too it was heavily vandilized though and has just been sitting, the engine and transmission don't have too many miles on them. If i were to take the transmission to someone who rebuilds them, is it possible to modify the A transmission enough so that it will fit and work with my 440? I figured I could at least get the car, take the parts that are good and sell or swap for the parts I need.

Yesterday I took a transmission from a 1967 Chrysler Town and Country with a 360. It is an A-727 B, so it will fit my 440. My next questions are about the slapstick. First of all where can i find more information about this feature. I understand that the slapstick allowed the automatic transmission to shift manually, could you also put the car in drive like a typical automatic transmission today? I do not believe my transmission had the slapstick feature, can any TorqueFlite be made in to a slapstick relatively inexpensively?
