anyone used a 557 lift mopar cam in a 383 ?

my engine combo so far is
4.250 std 383 cid
Indy ez 440 alloy heads
1.6 ratio roller rockers
mopar 557 lift purple solid cam
heavily ported Holley street dominator single plane manifold & 2 3/4" carb spacer
750 Holley dp
Aries ( spelling ) forged dome top pistons machined to suit 11:1 compression with Indy heads ( 78 cc )
bores shrouded for large valves ( 2.190 / 1.81 )
std & balanced & lightened forged crank
std full race prepped rods / arp wave lok bolts & floating pins
msd billet dizzy , 6al ign , & blaster 2 coil
hi vol oil pump , 1/2" pickup & baffeled deep sump
windage tray .
( at the moment 3000 stall )
3.9 diff
3200lbs Ute
727 trans

now my question is what stall have you ran with this cam ?
my engine machinist is recommending a 4200 rpm stall for the duration of that cam ( 296* Dur / 252* @ .050 + what ever the 1.6 ratio rockers make ) + 3.9 diff gears & weight of the Ute .
& when added with 383 CID big valves & port volume .

my friend & i are thinking that with the below the curve power these heads make ( low end power ) & advancing the cam maybe 4* degrees we should get away with a 3500 - 3800 stall .

after all this is a street car  well supposed to be anyway :D . your thoughts .

That motor is going to be a screamer! I would go with the 4200 stall if not more! but you did say it's a street car. Make sure to check the valve to piston clearance with those dome pistons(arias)!

Dead, have you run any sort of program to see where the torque and HP is on that combo? That'd prolly give you a better idea of where to put your stall. I used to have Mr Gasket's Desktop dyno, and while it's not super precise, it'd give you an idea of what you had and how changes would affect the curves. It won't work with Windows 7 so it's history here now dang it

john van the machine shop guy is dummy assembling the bottom end & using one head with rockers , so thats all getting checked . he's also machining the pistons to suit 11;1 compression . ( we have good 98 octane fuel over here )
& for you buck ! i haven't used a calculator , but i have done a lot of reading & understand the good under the curve power ( Indy heads ) combined with aggressive solid cam & 11:1 compression & the way i have raised the intake runners ( on the plenum side ) all the way up to the carb flange in conjunction with 2 3/4 of carb spacer that should really allow the air & fuel to negotiate the top bend of the intake runners to help maintain good air speed & there for more torque & hp . & using such a high stall it should really be making very good power straight off the stall . & by using a 750 with that combo & lightened bottom end & good ignition it should by very throttle responsive . engine shop dude is thinking a very honest 580 hp maybe more ;) . I'll be very happy with that out of a std bore 383 with std crank & rods revving to 7000 rpm :D . MOPAR FOR LIFE

Deadkelly, sounds good,I think you will be very happy with it.

dead, dont you think you'll need more than 750cfm?

deadkelly 02-01-2010 05:15 PM

why in deed :D
just comes down to cash mate . the carb spacer & extra manifold volume from porting will add more plenum volume ( more air fuel supply on tap so to speak ) but thats until i can afford a 950 cfm Holley hp , Barry grant ect .
ahead of me i need a roll cage , toughened up 727 , 5 point harness , 3-3 1/2 " custom exhaust & custom headers , cal tracs & single leaf spring & tires to hook up , better brakes , fuel pump , gauges ectect the list goes on . the 750 will work for now but yes a 950 is the way to go & Indy max wedge 4bbl low deck inlet manifold . & while I'm off work because of my hand that puts me back 3-4 months to get back on my feet again cash wise .

got my block back today

all machine work complete :D ( very happy ) i have 10.7:1 compression now . there are no clearence isuess with such a baby cam :D . it's all green for go .
i'm just waiting for some cash to get rings , cam & lifters , 1/2 oil pick up msd leads & block plugs . & thats that for the engine ;) .

deadkelly 02-27-2010 06:48 PM

ordered my cam & lifters last night .

the 557 cam uses a 3 bolt cam so i had to buy a timing chain with 3 bolt gear set . & sell the single bolt roll master that i already have, & fitted the crank gear  it never fooking ends .
well I'm finally getting very close , i ordered piston rings , oil pick up , cam bolts , block plugs , extra sump gasket for windage tray . next payday will be hi vol oil pump & alloy water pump & housing
