I've had problems with my 67 Fury III when trying to start it after it has been running for awhile. It usually occurs after a long highway run. Any ideas?

ballast could be getting hot and cutting out. AMC had this problem with their FSJ. It turned out that the ECM would get hot and just cut out, sometimes even while people were driving.

Are you still getting fuel and spark when it won't start? Does it turn over or just do nothing at all? We need a little more discription of what is going on with it..... or at least i do.

fuel, spark and air are no problem. It cranks over strong but takes waaaay too long to fire up. Recently the cap, rotor, wires, starter and plugs were changed (3 weeks ago). Timing is good as well. When its cold it fires right up, it's when it's at running temp is where the problem occurs.

oh and ballast and starter relay are new as well

High float level, possible flooding when hot. Float bowl boil-over. Actually look at the carb before you try to start it hot. Look for drips or wet fuel, or overflow through the float bowl vent tube. You wouldnt notice it on a cold start because the fuel would have evaporated or washed down into the crankcase. Is the oil smelling gassy? On a hot start...when it does start..does it chug and misfire at first, then clear up?

I know you said you're getting fuel. but vapor lock can be sneaky. How hot does the engine get once it's off the highway? The opposite is also possible, as scott said, but we're assuming you'd notice the gas smell.

OK, silly question, you're not pumping the gas pedal on a warm engine are ya?

Not a silly question as this is my wifes daily driver! She may well be pumping it to start. One thing I did do today was to move the fuel filter away from the valve cover and the heater core hose, I thought that the fuel may be boiling off. I will "remind" her not to pump it when its hot. There is a slight gas smell when she does it. I am swapping cars with her this week so I can mess with it. I work out of town during the week so 2 days is never enough time to troubleshoot and fix before I have to drive 4 hours to work.

scotts- temp never gets too hot, the cooling system is basically fresh, i.e. rad, water pump, hoses, ect. I think archer is probably on to something about "pumping" it.

Does it have an automatic choke or manual?
Is it points or electronic control ignition?
