Coolant leak

I was installing some ignition wire brackets and when I started to remove the front right header stud from the engine, alot of coolant began leaking out. :( I'm a novice mech, but I'm pretty sure coolant should not be there. Any ideas of what could be wrong would be much appreciated. Thanks

I take it that its probably the first stud.

That is normal. The stud actually plugs that water passage. I've used that stud to drain fluid from the heads before removing them so that I wouldn't get (or get less) coolant all over the place when I pulled a head off.

No worries, water jacket.

you need to put sealer on that stud or it might weep coolant.

That just made my day :D Someone told me it might be a cracked head. Thanks for the help guys

Crack that person's head for say that. (lol don't really) But yes put a thread sealer compound on that stud before reinstalling it. And don't forget to top off your cooling system.

i found this out when i put headers on my fifth ave. the front and rear stud on both sides will drain the coolant. the header instructions didnt say to drain the coolant first but its nothing to worry about.

Hi Marky,
I asked the same thing when i was changing the gasket on my

hey cuda, thats a bitch aint it, happened to me too , drivers front stud. just flush with head. had no trouble getting it out, then went to finish rest of studs and the back 1 broke too lol. I was pissed. of course its power brakes, of course its big tube headers, of course teh steering shaft runs right next to it. was the last part of the install too, didnt want too pull the motor again, had to use a right angle drill adn get it out, after 2 hrs, Id been better off to pull the motor, next time I know better, no more headers.

What would you recommend for a sealant in this situation? Mine is leaking after a heli-coil instalation.

John Van 01-31-2010 09:30 AM

Any high temp silicone sealer will do
