This may be a shot in the dark but I can remember a few times I had this problem with a Checy and an AMC. Both were 4-V carbs on V-8's but the problem was caused by a vacuum leak at the manifold. You can try the old school detection trick by running the engine and then spraying the manafold at the gasket seal areas around the base of the carb and where it meets the heads. If the engine speeds up you have a leak in that area. Good luck and I hope this helps.

yes that works just fine you can use starting fluid. spray the vacumm lines too.
