how do i indentify 318 block?
Hello, I'm brand new to the group and I realize if I search I could probably find the answer to this, however I'm going to look at an engine in the morning and don't really have the time to search right now. The 318 engine is a 1966 model, (althoughI have no idea what vehicle it came out of), with a 727 auto trans. How can I tell if it is a "poly" block or the newer LA block?
Thanks, Brett |

Easy. Look at the valve covers
Poly's have scalloped bottom edge on the valve covers http://1962to1965mopar.ornocar.org/i...ouse-guest.jpg Poly head http://image.classictrucks.com/f/tec...ain_layout.jpg LA engines have straight sides on the valve covers, a single rocker shaft with all rockers inline. To my knowledge there were no LA 318's in 66. Only LA in 66 was the 273. If it's an LA, look immediately under the parting line for the left side head on the front of the block for a long stamped number. CID should be in first 3 or 4 numbers, IE X273XXX, etc. |
A big thanks to all for your responses it has helped immensely!
