Intermediate steering shaft 1975 W200

Does anyone have experience attempting to fix the classic Dodge truck 1/4 turn of the steering wheel before you feel the wheels respond phenomenon? I see that Borgeson makes a very expensive replacement shaft that seems to be "the" fix. All of thier listings however are for 79 and newer, I have a 1975. I wonder where you can get the original parts, and is the price worth that appraoch versus Borgenson's shaft?

Thanks,

Ray

I've repaired a few but they all had tilt wheels and the three bolts that hold it all together inside were all loose.

Are you sure that you need a new shaft and not just a rag joint or are you looking at replacing the shaft because you don't want the rag joint?

Is it slop in the actual steering wheel or in the steering gear box itself? It should have an allen head/lock-nut on steering box that gives some adjust ment if it is in the steering box, just loosen the lock-nut, and then tighten the allen bolt, it may take 1 turn or less depending on how much wear is in box. If its not in the box make sure the rag joint is ok (if it has one). Thats a fiber/rubber disc joining the column to the gear box, if it is broken or worn out it will cause slack in steering. Other than that if its not a tilt wheel as 78D200 suggested i dunno...

It is non tilt. Rag joint and steering box are ok, the play comes from the slip joint at the other end. I can watch the shaft coming from the steering wheel move a quarter turn before the intermediate shaft responds in kind. I can not find replacement parts for this.

You may want to give flaming river a call and do a search online to see who makes steering shafts. It may be something that you need to have made up due to teh fact that there are not a high demand for these in these vehicles.

sounds like the shaft has some slop on the steering wheel end then , just replace the column in the cab w/ another unit, man they made a blue million 74-7 trks, .I d spend a few bucks and time trying a salvage yard unit first to see if that even affected the outcome befoe i spnt big money to try a fix.
