66 monaco Name that power Steering pump?
3 Attachment(s)
Hello
I have a 66 Monaco with 383 in it and it did not come with PS pump from the factory. PS pump was added to this car sometime down the road. I believe sometime in the 70's. My PS pump is making some noise. like a rattle, like something is loose inside but the pumps works just fine. There is a little play in the shaft(In and out) but not sideways. So anyways I want to either replace this pump or fix it. i'm not familiar with power steering pumps. Before I do anything I need to identify perhaps what car this pump came out off or year this pump might be, I need some info to work with if I need to get parts or a kit for it. attached are some pics. I believe the dodge Monaco did not have PS available until 1968. but not sure. 1. Please help me identify this pump. see pics 2. What is in a rebuild kit? seals, bearings? 3. Should I just take the pump and send away and get it rebuilt. Thanks for any direction. please let me know if you need more info. cheers Glen |

i had a 300 L its pump was mounted different. but yours looks like the bracket and the rest are mounted right. but above all do NOT flush the pump under power with solvent, kerosene, or gasoline, ONLY use oil.

that helps greatly. now I need to decide between getting a Reman or just rebuild it myself. Reman Cardone one you linked to above from Rock Auto is $85 shipped to my door here in Canada. Not to bad.
cheers :) Cardone ACDELCO LARES ATSCO What is the best one to go with for quality? I also have the option of sending my pump to Rock auto(im sure other places too) to be rebuilt. Cheers |
I would not replace the Federal with another of the same brand - Saginaw's are way
superior and sit nicely below the right head. Saginaw's are more consistent in out put and have a larger pulley due to their flow curves. Once you buy the bracketts ( I got mine from 440 Source for $50 ) you can hang any Saginaw pump in there and pick them up at the auto wreckers fo $25, The Federal just has too small a reservoir, too small a power robbing pulley and aren't widely available. If you do go Saginaw, keep your belt cause it fits right on. Another thing you will notice with the Federal is that if the belt gets loose or stretches, it rubs on the water pump pulley because the belt runs so close - not so with Sag's |
