rear main seal

rear main seal

HI I am replacing the rear main seal in a 62 slant six.
Hoping to get help here.

Engine is out,still has original rope seal.I have a new Fel-pro seal kit to fit,but how do i remove the old seal from the block and clean the seal grove?

You need to pop off the rear main crankshaft cap. After that, you'll be able to remove the rope seal from the cap (2 piece seal) and then push the other half of the seal outwards. They make a tool to push the seal out from under the crankshaft, but I think you'll be able to grab it with a point pliers and yank it out.

I’ve always loosened all the main caps so I could lift the crank slightly then remove and install the new seal. I don’t put the lower seal in flush with the pan rail but off a quarter inch or so, this will help with sealing the two pieces together. Black RTV applied to the ends is necessary also.

Very good advice on loosening the main caps, thousands of an inch space will help out tremendously.

Never worked on a Mopar before,mainly Mack trucks lol.
