shaving heads & manifolds

if i shave .010 th off my heads how much do i have to take off the manifold inlets ?

I wouldn't think any dk, 10 thou off a head wont change things with relation to the intake that much. If you were going 30,50 thou than I would say yes.

Why are you shaving?

Whenever I have had anything shaved, I would give the machine shop the block, heads and intake so that they can shave everything to match up perfectly.

there hairy :D
more compression mate . i don't know how much i'll shavem yet , i'll wait till i measure it, i'll take as much as i can so i still have .090 piston to head clearance including the head gasket . that & the new flat head valves i have should bump it up a fair bit . the thing I'm concerned about is not many machine shops over here work on mopar big blocks . i don't want them to have a guess & she'll be right mate . i want it right or not at all .;)

My machinist adn I got into a conversation about this ounce. i knew a guy that couldnt keep intake gaskets on his small block, they kept blowing. found out that they shaved his heads .10thou. left a gap between the intake and head edges. The machinist said when he cuts heads at all you split the diff. on the intake per side to match it out. sounds kosher, you drop the heads .10 the whole intake height drops .10 respectivly. so you cut each side of the intake.05, thats my take. Normally though, on a normal rebuild, the heads only get cut a few thou. on a clean up if they need it. It doesnt sound like much but when you look at a micrometer, go from .o2 up to .10 thast a good gap. Guy in the story had the intake shaved, ready or not, no more intake gasket faliures.

I agree, maybe we are getting measurements crossed here.
.010= 10 thousandths of an inch
.100= 100 thousandths of an inch, 10 times bigger than .010, If this much was shaved off the heads than I would definitely match the intake. If you consider that the average human hair is about .002-.004 give or take, 10 thou isn't that big.:)

DK - If I were you, I'd fine myself a machine shop that does work on Mopar and talk to them about it. RR sounds right. If you have the heads shaved, your going to have to get the intake shaved too.

yeah i think .005 off the manifold for every .010 off the heads sounds about right . but it's still guessing ? maybe ??

deadkelly 03-13-2009 06:39 PM

ether has my chevy mate , he just wants ta rip .040 th straight off & chuck em on , she'll be right he reckons . thats why i spent $100 bucks on books & they say not to just go for it . if i read a million pages i'll find it , i was just hoping someone knew . ;)
