speedometer not working??

I have a 67 Sport Fury. My speedometer pins the needle all the way to the right when driving. It will stay once it gets there even when I stop. I can disconnect the cable, turn the thing the cable goes into and bring the needle back to zero. But when I hook it back up and drive, at first it will bounce, then go straight to pinned to the right. Any ideas what to do????

cable frayed? making it bounce? the replacement cable cut to fit style is pretty cheap 8 bucks or so, id 1st check and see if the cable itself is bad,

I would pull the speedo housing from the tranmission and check the condition of the gear. On the 727 you can rotate the housing in the transmission to adjust the gear clearance. Perhaps it's out of adjustment and it's jamming the gear.
