1965 318 stalling out
Hey,
I have a 1965 318 with 1996 Magnum heads, flat top pistons, a mild cam, air gap intake, 650 Edelbrock and Mallory internal electronic ignition. We had the car running fine and the motor threw a rod so, I rebuilt it and now we cannot keep her running. She dies after a little while like the motor is flooded or something. Also put a new flext plate, and 2000 stall torque convertor in the car.
Just cannot seem to keep her going and make her run smooth. I did use regular gas this time and maybe that is the problem but, just want to check if there may be another problem I am missing. I will try an octane booster tomorrow to see if that helps.

Hey Bob
Fuel line is good. Filter before the carb. I set the floats in the carb as per manual. 7/16" and 1" total play. Motor is just not smooth. I was thinking gas because it is the only thing that we changed. I was wonder about vacuum too though. If I have the electroni ignition, do I still need the vacuum from the carb to the distributor for the advace? I tried both ways and no difference.

I'm thinking you might have the distributor of by one tooth. So check the distributor #1 against the damper TDC..

Like Iowan said.. Firing order is good?
also you have the rite Ballast Resistor to go with the Mallory Dist. unit? "I'm Not sure if you just added this from the last time it was running?"
Are you sure the cam and crank are timed correctly?
also maybe you swapped the wires when you rehooked up the dist. to the coil?

I have bypassed the ballast resistor and it seemed to work fine without it before that rebuild with the electronic point system. Do I really need it? Also, TDC is good. I will check wiring. My son is working on it and mostly in a hurry so, he may have hooked up the coil and new points incorrectly. Timing chain and camshaft are as before. I did put another crank in it because the last one was beat up from the broken rod. Crank came out of a poly and fits right in.
