1972 fuel tank replacement

I have a question regarding purchasing a new fuel tank for my 1972 plymouth satellite. My dad was telling me that it is possible that there was 2 versions of my fuel tank because of the way they made changes during the year.

I found this one: http://www.jcwhitney.com/spectra-fue...799y1972g891j1

I think it'll fit, but my dad (who has built many cars in his time) is being cautious and wants to know more about if it'll work or not. I guess the hole can either be on the side or on the top. I'm sure if I dropped the tank out, which I'm not entirely ready to do yet, I could easily find out before ordering.

Hopefully, there wasn't any or minimal changes made on the tank so that I shouldn't have to worry about it fitting.

If anyone has experienced this or knows more information, please let me know.

Am not for sure of any running production changes that year, but you should be able to have a 'look-see' with a mirror to make your choice. The link you provided shows 2 different styles but am not for sure they are of the "actual" tanks or just a representation. Knowing the time of the production change and when your car was built is the way to decide...(before April or after) That said then its a matter of a phone call when you order, and maybe they can explain the difference, and you can then make the choice.

My guess would be emission changes for the different tanks
I would guess it has the ***56 tank Check yours for the emissin hose connections on the tank Check the 1JA071757 and notice the 4 hose connections on the tank- right side of the picture That is the difference

Ahh, yeah I see what you mean about the difference. I checked my tank and it looks like the hose connects are on the driver-side towards the back. I guess I would just need some longer hoses and use the tank with the 4 connections toward the front? (http://www.jcwhitney.com/20-gal-repl...Id=149901&mc=1)

The one I linked in my first post looks no where close to my original tank.

If yours is the emission version There should be like 5 different hoses going to the tank. The Non emission tank would have just the fuel hose going to the sending unit and maybe a smaller breather/ return hose

Mark the hoses when you remove them !!!!

Kevin the emissions version is if the car was built after april 72, non emissions pre april 72, that said you can decode the fender tag to get the build date. I couldn't see any differences between the ****56, ****57 tanks from the picture, and I would think the only difference would be in the actual sending unit itself, but dont know that to be a fact either, as it may have other fittings on the tank its not showing. (BTW, I NEVER go by pictures on the internet when shopping for stuff like that, as they usually use 'stock' fotos. ie general, generic )

But if you can figure how many lines YOUR tank has you can then make the decision.

As TV said a non emissions tank would have 3 hoses at the most, and more than likely 2 one for the feed line to engine on sending unit, then maybe a vent and then the filler
