318 balanced 360 unbalanced
I have a d600 dump with a worn out 318 (manual trans) I was given a very good 360 (Auto trans)...hence my problem. Due to the heavy duty bell housing the 318 has an extra spacing plate as part of the fly wheel.
I want to use the 318 fly wheel and add weights to make it compatible with the 360. If i had two fly wheels i could bolt them together and mark the places for the weights and weld on the new weights but i am comparing a fly wheel to an torque converter. AND if it were possible i don't know how to line up the two to get the locations. Have been told that if i am careful i can get them close enough

The problem with that is I believe they drill holes opposite of the light spot to make it balance. The auto converter has a weight added because there is no way to remove weight. If you have the 360 converter you could do some careful measurements and get close.
Or just take it to a machine shop that does engine balancing

You can. And you are heading in the right direction.

This is pricey. I would just measure and tack. I good trans shop will have the weights. Or you could make them if you get the weight amount. I may have the weight ounce around here somewhere... if you cant find it pm me so I remember.
Remember its a two piece balance so you need the dampner / weight for the nose that is on the 360.

DO NOT weld weights to a stick flywheel
There exists in www land a diagram for drilling a neutral flywheel to obtain 360 balance, but THIS CHANGES with different flywheels!!!!
That is, a big heavy truck flywheel is not going to "see" the same balance weight setup as the original "car" flywheel this diagram was meant for.
Also realize that 360 is not the only engine to be externally balanced, and only the 360LA is "this amount" of "off" balance
340's with cast cranks were a small amount using special dampers
360 (5.9) magnums are different external balance than LA 360s.
SOMEPLACE I saw a weight plate, IE a thin plate similar to a converter flex plate that sandwitched between the flywheel and crank flange. Don't remember where I saw this or what it was for

huh??? Who said weld to the flywheel? Sorry. If I implied that.. my fault. Leave that nuetral for quick resurfacing.
Magnums use a flex plate. Some have the weights on the plate. Others on the torque converter. So you can get a neutral flex, it has no ring gear on it, and sandwich it in front of the flywheel all day long. Just match balance to an LA TC. All 71 to 92 LA 360 are external balance and the same or they have been altered after the factory.
You can weld to this plate all day long. Ive done it to use neutral TC. As you suggested "sandwich" and you are good to go. The engine will not care if its a nuetral TC or flywheel behind the crank.

just to throw my two cents in. Its a D600 318. It may already have a forged crank in it. Got a picture of the harmonic balancer on the 318? Reason I ask is that you may not need to play with drilling holes or balancing of the flywheel.

if you got as forged steel crank in your 318 that's a fricken tough crank and rare i got a 318 from a military van has the steel crank in it i'm saving the block for a future megga build
