318 compression test help.

Whats is the best way to check the compression on the engine while it is on a engine stand. I took the compression while it was in the truck and had it wrote down but i have lost the paper. Also what should the compression be? Any help would be great. Thanks

It may be difficult because you need the starter to turn the engine, that mounts to the trans . Depending on year 125-150 lbs usually. Aftermarket cams changes the compression

So I would be better off putting the engine back in the truck and hook it back to the trans? I believe the cam that is in the motor now is stock but I am going to be replacing it with a mild cam. I mainly wanted to pull the engine to redo the gaskets, freeze plugs, clean and paint the engine and the mild cam and lifters.. Wasn't planning on messing with the bottom end if the compression was good just top end.

Or you could do a cylinder leak down test. It won't give you the compression pressure, but it will determine the overall condition of the rings and valve sealing.

Alright. I have never done a leak down test before. How do you do the leak down test and is there a tool I need to have? I have turned the crank with a breaker bar 4 full turns and can only get up to 80 psi on each one.

. Or many other youtube videos.

You could also put the engine on the floor and hook up the trans to do the compression test.. It is is an LA engine replace the timing chain. If it is a Magnaum chain should be ok
