318 with Cop Heads
So I know this is on here but no of them seem to be what I have.
I got a 318 engine that came out of a 80 Newport and I got cop car heads off from a 86 Fury. Just trying to see what you guys think if this works. I have read alot about compression dropping and having to shave the heads. I do have a 2 barrel 360 intake on it also. I has be re rung, with a Comp 268H cam in it. Any feed back would be helpful. how does it run with a 2bbl and teh 268 cam?
|
I dont know have not fired it up yet. Getting carb rebuilt
|
i ran that 268 h in my 318 w 360 head's
i am assuming that your running 360 cop head's not 318 cop heads? If 318 heads you may want to port them and put 188-160 vales in them if they don't have them already a set of stock 360 head's should be milled at least 0.30 i have done 0.50 to keep compression high, i have also ported the head's and kept the 188-160 valves no need to go bigger for the street. |
Yea, sorry it was a 318 block that had 360 heads on it. How bad does the compression drop it it does not get milled?
|
i have not had any issues on my early 318s.
Your kinda trading velocity for volumetric efficiency a set of 360 heads flow efficiently for the small c.i. la My set up now is very competitive you will notice a big change in performance over the 318 head's Your compression will be low i'm not sure what the base compression is for that yr. If you can get the heads milled if not you will still have a marked improvement over the 318 heads i know i did the similar swap w the same cam use a small carb around 650 headers and aluminium intake is all good, just for a quick note if you do head work don't go larger than 188 valves the 318 doesn't really need anything bigger and you will start getting into valve cylinder wall contact you will have to have the cylinders chamfered. |
x2 on that; good advice.

Thanks for the advice guys!

Would you have to mill the heads that .030 if they were already on a 318 engine? That was its stock setup! Was a 318 engine with these 360 heads on it, it was a cop car? Just wondering??

If you use the 360 heads have them milled at least 0.30 too a max of 0.50 |
Take .030 off and take some off the intake side of the heads too. Not sure of the exact amount . No need to worry. The last 360 I built I had .050 removed from the Block for O deck. plus surfaced the heads for 64cc along with custom push rods. about .070-.080 total

How much can you take off before you have to take some off the intake side of the head? Ive been reading and for evey .010 you take off the piston side of the head you have to remove .0095 off the intake side. Is this correct or what are you guys doing that are taking .030 off. Im thinking of going .040 off the piston side of the head or is that too much?? Thanks to all help you have already given me!!

This topic is interesting to me because I’ve a 318 project and I can’t decide between having the 318 heads worked over or doing just what you are thinking of doing, which is sourcing some 360 heads and milling them a tad to keep compression in the stock range, which for me would be 9.2:1 if I remember right.
|
Yea I know Im not sure what I wanna do I have the 360 Heads on it right now but have not ran it yet. Just dont want it to be dogish and no torque or power. Going to get the casting number off my heads and run it to get as much info off it as possible!!!

4323345 These are the casting numbers to the heads that I have. Which is the ones that everyone says to mill!! How much can you mill off before you have to mill the intake side of the head! Im looking at .030 to .040 taking of the bottom side of the head. How much would i have to take off the intake side or can I leave that??
