318 horsepower bump

hey folks...........In the midst of a "restomod" on my 1969 Winnebago 22footer(STOP laughing).............while dependable as gravity, my 318 with 52k actual miles is a bulbous TERD, and I can use a CALENDAR instead of a speedometer. SSSSOOO, with that said, I would like to bump-up to about 300hp without spending mucho $$$$$. USE: I drive all-over the U.S. going to airshows...do NOT tow anything....get about 8-9mpg. on this 8,000lb dodge dually with 4:10 dana 70hd axle, 727 tf.. Obviously, I need torque, not hi rpm hp. My self-imposed dreamworld specs are ....less than 3600rpm MAX (torque curve). I heard that a cheap way (under 1k$) would include 360 heads (circa 1984ish), good valve job, long tube headers, mild rv cam, and possibly a perf distributor. A friend says that upping comp ratio with zero deck pistons,360 heads and headers would likely help the most for my "budget". Im not trying to make a supermodel out of this truckstop skank, but need some more grunt for long uphill climbs. P.S. I recently installed a brand new Edelbrock 500cfm carb because my thermoquad had the "old-age stumble" off red lights....also, anybody there pay $25 plus shipping for the carb? Your expertise in MOPAR is needed,as Im a FORD guy. T^hanks for any honest input ...........bob

Welcome Bob. The first suggestions are spot on, the piston change is too much money for what you want. Do a warm compression test first to see the quality of your ring seal. I used a Comp Cam XE 256 HE in our truck 318 and was very impressed.
