318 small block

I'm wondering. What are the 318 small blocks made out of?? I've been hearing recently they are made out of nickel alloy but I've always been told they were made of cast iron. Can someone clarify this and tell me who is right or wrong? If so if they are made out of nickel what years did they make them and what would be the casting number to look for??

They are Cast Iron with nickel added to make it stronger. Alloy is the word used when you mix metals.

They have always been mostly cast iron with other metals added to them.

Here's a good explanation....
