383 losing power' daily driver help/info

new member from atlanta, help!!!!

Hey guys I'm new to the forum just curious about how my engine is reacting. I have a 71' Newport with a 383 Carb and intake are thr only engine mods.

Dash bezel reads hot constantly even when car is cold, but also ocationally cold flashes up as well.. but when I press the throttle it fades away. Once car is running and I get up to about 55-60 MPH car seems to bogg down and lose power, It spudders as if its trying to catch up with itself. I tried flooring the throttle in that instance and the motor has no reaction to full throttle it go silent. Must come to complete stop for motor to regain its power back so I can properly accelerate. Any ideas!?!?!?!

The driving problem sounds like fuel starvation. What carb do you have? Welcome to the forum.

Thanks, its edlebrock 650 thunder series. For a good six months the car ran great, could go 110mph easy all day. Now its hard to get it over 60 without it sputtering

Like in your outher post members have recognized this as a fuel problem. A plugged fuel filter may clear up the problem but you may want to consider looking in the carb for debris and a full fuel system inspection. When they get older gas tank sludge and rust will continually give problems.
Fuel tank and lines may need cleaning or replacement.

Ethanol can actually gum up a carb after a period of time and worst is if it sets and is not started frequently. Try some carb/injector cleaner and some fresh gas.

OK so put your self in my shoes. List the first 3 things you would replace

I would first remove fuel filter and cut open to see how contaminated and or plugged. This would decide my next action. If not too bad install new and check flow rate and maybe pressure, if ok then test drive.

If plugged with sludge and rust I'd be taking the tank out to inspect. My next action would be clean and flush tank and lines based on condition.

Hard to say one two three without inspecting each component.
