440 6 pack problems
Hey guys, I have a problem. I never get on my car, but yesterday I deified to see what she had. I got on it for prolly one sec (seriously) and was content. Got to my destination and car would barely idle. Popped hood and noticed I have oil all on header gasket area, looks like it came from oil cap and maybe Pcv? Maybe valve covers idk. But now teres a loud "suction" sound coming from back of motor, maybe rear carb. It increases with engine rpm. (suck, suck, suck, suck but it gets faster). Checked vacuum lines, everything connected. Idk where to go now.
|
you can spray carb cleaner around where the sound is (vac. leak) you will know when you spray in the rite spot idle will go down . sounds like rear intake gasket failed if all lines are good !
|
Wouldnt I be losing oil if it had a busted intake gasket? It almost sounds like exhaust leak but it's a suction sound, confusing. Usually a vacuum leak is a constant sucking huh?
|
I say vacuum leak too. Although if you spray water, WD-40 or carb cleaner the idle will go up and not down when you find the right spot. Suck Suck Suck is the duration of your cam. It might cause a whistling sound also.

It almost sounds like its coming from the back carb. Ima need a new oil cap it seems, and maybe a new vent deal that goes to the air cleaner and carb. Oil was running out of the cap. Prolly new valve over gasket as well. I hope its the carb gasket or something, idk though. I was able to tighten the back carb bolts a little. I don't wanna have to pull the intake lol I just never heard of such a thing. It just all the sudden ran like crap. Its loud too, u can hear it with good closed so it's gotta be a large leak. No power brakes btw so I know it's nothing with that. I'll get some carb cleaner and try, just hate to crank it it sounds so bad.

Or a blown head gasket or a blown valley pan, ect ect.
Better start using a stethoscope and carb cleaner and see if you can find the issue. Pretty hard to diagnosis over the internet with no video atleast. |
All the oil could just be from hammering on it and over pressuring the crank case. Work on what's making it run bad first. Sometimes its worth some coin for someone else to fix it.
|
Check the power brake hose on back of carb or make sure the plug did not come out first, then the PVC valve and the Valve cover gasket.. Make sure the throttle blade in the rear carb is closing

I get home from new Orleans today. Ima check it out. I figure with the vacuum leak, maybe the pcv isn't working properly allowing the oil to do that? I know the gasket is broke on my oil filler cap, idk if that's vital. I think it may have blew out the valve cover gasket though. I just don't understand how it could build up that much pressure in the crank case. Unfortunately I really don't have anyone I know reputable enough around here I'd bring my car too. I have a feeling it's the rear carb gasket. What would cause the rear throttle blade not to close all the way? I looked into the back carb and it seems to be closed.
