440 - Underdrive Waterpump Pulley - Too slow?
 

On my 440 big block, I picked up a set of aluminum aftermarket pulleys (crank & water pump)..... didn't realize they were "underdrive" I believe....

Correct me if I'm wrong, but and underdrive pulley set will not spin the water pump as fast as with a stock setup?

I have edlebrock heads, a 180 thermostat... and engine seems to run around 210 degrees.... yesterday after driving it home, it hit about 212 and then puked out the overflow resevoir (I had the resevoir filled up half way)...

Should I switch back to stock setup? Do they make stock size aluminum pulleys?

I think I would put the stock one back on and then find a smaller pulley to drive the water pump faster.

Just a question Phil..... How much timing did you put in the motor?

Also... When My cooling system is full.... I only run about 1/8 of water in the overflow / Recovery system, this will allow it to move back and forth with out making a mess. You just have to keep an eye on it because of evaporation.
But thats what has worked for me anyhow.... :)

I'll go back to stock pulley setup and see if that helps.

Looking at the dyno sheet from the motor shop.... looks like 32 degrees of timing.... good? too much? too little?

I have to pull the plugs and see how they look too.

in the late 60s from the factory the "B" and "RB" engines water pump. the air cond pump had 6 blades. the non-air cond pump was 8 blades. sound back wards? the A / C pump was spun faster, to get more air through the radiator. but with 8 blades it would have to much water. but most aftermarket makers did not do it like chrysler. i got this info from a very old chrysler parts guy who and an in side track to chrysler engineering.

32*might be the total? Unless you have a locked distributor?
Anyway My point was to look to see if possibly the motor was retarded in timing which will cause them to run hot at times.

32* Is all in at around 2,000 - 2,200 RPM I assume ???

If it's lean, your rite,, It might be running warm from that also...
