440 Big Block Heads/Camshaft Help
Hey all, I have a Chrysler 440 big block I pulled out of a motorhome (I think either 1974-1977) and would like to refresh the top end of it.
I am looking to buy new heads/cam/lifters. I would like to have a hydraulic roller cam/lifters that is a little rough at idle but nothing radical. 1)The darn thing only has 8:1 Compression. Will getting 75 cc head chambers be worth having less airflow vs getting the compression up to 8.5:1? 2) Is it okay to put in a roller cam/lifters in a stock short block, do I need special heads that are designed for roller cams/lifters? 3) Does anyone have any recommendations of head/cam combos that are under $2000? Thank you all for your help, i'm a 21 year old trying to learn! :) |

$2000 ain't gonna happen, not with new parts. Since you're in playing/learning mode, the most cost effective "mini-overhaul" would be with something like an Edlebrock top end kit. You can call them on the specs that would be the most appropriate. http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/store...ck+top+end+440 Archer |
I think if I was going that far I'd put in a new set of rings and bearings and an oil pump.

I Agree... If its got some miles on it... what normally happens is you put a good top in on the old worn out short block and then it smokes like hell...
