440 compression

Hello everybody ! In first, exuse me if I’m wrong in my sentences because I speak French. In second lets talks for real :
I have a 1970 Dodge Challenger 4 speed with a 440 Magnum, street car.

The 440 engine is from 1973,
Compcams camshaft Street/Strip : Duration 284/296, at @.050 240/246
http://www.compcams.com/Company/CC/c...?csid=709&sb=2
Holley Sniper EFI 800 CFM, Edelbrock Torker II intake, MSD 6AL ignition, stainless exaust.

But I wan’t more compression (about, 9.7:1 / 10.8:1), cylinder heads are stocks (so 82cc if I'm good ?), I didn’t open the motor but I think pistons are stocks too, so my question is :
The best way is to change pistons and cylinder heads, or just piston, or just cylinder ? If cylinder heads what do you thing about the Edelbrock E-Street cylinders heads ? (in 75cc)
http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive/...treet-bb.shtml

Thanks you !

The heads will give you the best bang for your buck, stock heads are closer to 90 cc. And will out flow your stockers.

Thanks you

Are 70 and 73 pistons the same ? Did I need to change the deck clearence of the piston if I change for the Edelbrock E-street ?

What the best for my application : Edelbrock E-Street, Performer RPM, Victor ?

Looks like your looking to build something like this build? >>>>>>>> http://www.hotrod.com/articles/how-y...hp-street-440/
You might need to check and make sure the gasoline octane in France will be OK?

Keep us posted.... Welcome to the site... :)

Thanks you ! This engine they do is so cool ! The more octane in France are 98, I thing I'm gonna change the cylinder heads for the Edelbrock E-street and change the piston deck clearance, I thing I could be aroud the 9.5:1 comp and 400 HP whit a 75cc heads,.035 deck clearence and .038 head gasket

But did someone know the dome volume of factory pistons ?

And a last thing : sorry for my knowledge but it's my first time for engine building (but don't worry I won't be alone for doing that) how did we change the deck clearance of the pistons ?

Thanks

This is done with compression height (C.H.) which is the piston pin center line to the top of the piston. When you add C.H. with connecting rod length and 1/2 of crankshaft stroke you will get close to bock height. When comparing pistons look at C.H. first and you'll get close to zero deck and get quench with closed chamber heads.

As an example most Mopar engines have the piston "in the hole" below deck, there were some 340's built with the piston above deck to raise compression with the open chamber heads they had available. When you come to piston selection you will come across some called step pistons, these have a portion of it above the deck for open chamber heads to raise compression and if fit correctly give quench.

I would go with the Performer Head.

This might also help with some under standing... Not 100% that it will cross to French? But worth a try... :)

RacerHog : don't worry for me, I had learn all 'mecanical' term in english, in car parts I'm better in english than french ! Lol

Coronet 500 : oki doki thanks you !

With E-Street or Performer heads did I can keep factory rocker arms and pushrod or I need something like this https://www.summitracing.com/int/par...1-16/overview/ ??

RacerHog 04-16-2018 01:58 PM

Better to change the rockers and shafts so you are able to get the rite geometry after measuring for the rite push rod length...
Just my 2 cents

Okay thanks

RacerHog 04-16-2018 02:08 PM

Problem becomes... If you don't get the rite length push rod's, the load area will get to much side load, and has a trendies to bend or burn/crack the tips off the push rods.

Its already hapened to me, one pushrod and is lifter death, so if I change cylinder heads I need gaskets, bolts, rocker arms and good pushrod, nothing more ?

RacerHog 04-16-2018 02:22 PM

Just food for thought... :)

I have to say I am not an Edelbrock head fan, if your going to spend big money on heads go with Trick Flow 240s or 270s. I know of one .030 over 4.15 stroke 383 on e-85 that made 760 hp with the 240 heads. I have seen to many Edelbrock heads fail for various reasons with Edelbrock refusing to stand behind their products.

Food for thought?

RacerHog 04-16-2018 07:56 PM

I agree... You have to go threw any head that you buy..

Apewalski70 04-17-2018 06:12 AM

lowan / racerhog : okok I take note, didn't have a lot of money, but if I need just more time for something better I can wait and save more money.

Drag Pak : thanks you !
