440 Tear down

Gang the tear down is complete and i just dropped all parts off at the machine shop to be tested and cleaned. I will see what is reuseable and what work needs to be done. Not bad for first tear down, I broke 1 water pump bolt and a piston, other than that all went well. I will keep the pics coming for the rebuild and will have many questions in what to use.

I got word back from my engine builder today, he said that metal parts are all good block is solid rods good heads are good. Cylinders bored 30 over, because I used the ridge reamer he may need to take it to 40 over. Lesson learned when dealing with ridge rimmer. We will sit down next week to discuss replacement parts, I will have a lot of questions concerning parts. What I am going with right now is easy replacement parts cast pistons to start with.

Use some KB Siviolite replacement pistons to get a 0 deck and a tad more compression

Thanks TVLynn, I got another call and he was able to go .30 over, Friday we will sit down with a build plan. My goal is to have around 9.5:1 CR with around 400hp. I want to reuse the stock heads and not sure how much work will need to be done with that. Any ideals on what size cam to run with those style pistons?

update to the rebuild. Bored the 440 .30 over going with TRW Forged pistons and performance rings. Comp Cam- Xtreme Energy™ Hydraulic Flat Tappet Camshaft 21-223-4- good for street machine with a slight rough idle and power 1600-5800 rpm range. Hydralic lifters, double roller timing chain. New ARP bolts in the connecting rod and main bearing caps. Using a Hemi oil pan with sump pump, so that I get better flow over the 440 stock with the use of high voume oil pump. All this with the goal of 9.5 CR and 400 hp. What are your thoughts?

Have your block drilled for a 1/2" pickup tube.

Brem, why 1/2 inch? I heard that would be more on the race line. I was led to believe that i would need do more to the engine if I did that. Thanks Joe

It's Eric and your using a HV pump. You might as well suck a 1/2" tube instead of 3/8" tube. I just switched to external pumping with a 7/8" suction line.

I wouldn't drill the block to 1/2 npt for the pickup rather leave it alone and use an adapter for 3/8 to 1/2 pickup tube. Unless you run a 7 quart pan there is the possibility that you will put oil up faster than it can drain back especially with stock heads. If you really want to improve oiling there are certain galleys on the block that should be reamed to a larger size. This info is all over the web but I've posted a link below. Remember that oiling is the life blood of an engine and this mod is highly recommended by most engine builders. Also, I wouldn't use Comp anything because most of it's offshore and R&D and Quality Control on their stuff seems to be more directed to the shareholders than the end user these days. Lunati, yes, Comp, no.
