65 Newport starting issue

Just purchased a 65 Newport with a 383 and automatic, The owner told me that once in a while when you turn the key it just clicks, so he replaced the starter and alternator and the problem still exists. After we got her home, it's happened a few times to me, it just clicks, then if you stay at long enough she finally starts. This is my first Mopar product so I am having a few issues locating things. I've placed the tranny in drive and neutral to test to see if maybe its the nuetral safety switch and it appears that it is working fine. I've checked the battery and all connections are good. I had a friend look at it and he says it appears to be the solenoid which he said is on the firewall, I called for a replacement and according to the parts place the 65 solenoid was on the starter it's self. I am lost? Could it be the ignition switch he is referring on the firewall? What else could this be, thanks in advance! HELP!!!!

thanks Moe, I installed a new one, still the same issue, I am thinking it's gotta be the starter solenoid, although the previous owner said he replaced the starter.

As a chrysler master tech I have rebult so many of these starters if I had a nickle for each one I would have $100 in my pocket. Everybody always says $1,000,000.but thats is just plane dumb if you had a million bucks you wouldnt work anymore... But what happens is there is large and small stud inside the starter or solinoid an electro magnet pull a copper washer into the 2 studs when you turn the key to start then when you release key a spring pushes it back. All that being said the studs burn off and dont make contact anymore. You can find the parts it would cost maybe $10. If you jump the 2 wires with a screw driver and it turns over it confirms the theory of what I just told you. If you replace the starter you might luck out and get a new style stater which is smaller stronger and faster which makes the engine start faster.Remans run about $60 new are double that. Keep us posted Bill

The thing you are calling a solenoid is a starter relay. The solenoid is on the starter see previous post

Thanks, I replaced the starter relay on the firewall so the next thing will be the solenoid on the starter or just the whole starter at this point.
