68 Newport Cam break in

Ok a little frustrated at this point, car started up good was breaking the cam in, but the car was getting hot like 210 220, radiator was ok, but the temp wouldn't shoot down , just put a new 180 thermostat in. The heater hoses were hot so the coolant was flowing through there we were trying to get the air bubbles out but for some reason it wouldn't drop, thnking bad thermostat right out of the box, the 195 worked good, with the old radiator. the new radiator is fine no leaks clogs coolant is clean when I drained it out. Any suggestions. Water pump is new hoses are clamped good, changing out the bottom hose being I used a stupid flex hose looks smaller than the molded, I don't know at this point. Gonna pick up a new thermostat tomorrow. Mayne because of the spring in the top hose? Any help would be appreciated

Spring in the top hose? Weird.

Running an engine at 2000rpm for 20-30 minutes creates a ton of heat. When I do one I have lots of air flow, if in the car an additional fan blowing at the grill, if in our engine stand a high capacity centrifugal fan blowing at the radiator and always a garden hose at the ready to cool the radiator if needed.

Always when filling the coolant system I fill at the heater hoses not the radiator cap to remove all air in the heads and block.

I am taking it out the onky reason the spring is in the hose is because the old one had it. The thermostat might not have been opening it opened once in the beginning. I Drained the radiator already I'm gonna take the thermostat out and boil it to see if it is no good. Have a new one on standby. Never had a problem with the 195 with the 2 barrel

Hmm...someone must have put a lower hose up top. I don't think the spring would affect the temp though. I once put a t-stat in upside down, caused some mild overheating issues.

I bought the Ac upper hose for the newport being my old one was 22" so, the old one was in the center. I am hoping its not the radiator just bought it. Just boiled the two thermostats the 195 and the 180 the 195 opened first and quicker, on the bottom both are stamped properly thought maybe they sent the wrong one.

Well put the new thermostat in, car still got to 230 but very slowly, the cam was broken in 3 10 minute shots had to shut it down before the temp got too high. After it was broken in we shut it down tried to start it again and nothing. Now i'm lost I want to start it up again to try it with the old belt driven fan on it. The never idled while breaking it in at all, followed every step to the tee.

ok quick update I drain the oil from the Newport no metal shavings or any kind of metal particles at all I filter the oil from the pan and you against and there was nothing on the napkin I also cut the oil filter open and I searched through the paper shining light through it and the magnet and no metal fragments whatsoever so I guess that's good, also I think the timing is definitly off, I think it is supposed to be 10 degrees before TDC.But I still don't know why it didn't start the other day after everything was broken in, I have a high torque starter that I will install, and the electronic kit from pertronix.

It starts now? Ghosts! Also, I'd throw the factory specs out the window on timing. 12-14 is where I would set it.

No it doesn't start I flooded the carb it also has manual choke so I need another person while I am doing it. Probably tomorrow. I was also told 12 to 14 by my machine shop that I was at today. Have you ever installed a electronic dist kit. Any tips?

Update on the Newport, adjusted the timing, at idle I am at around 14 degrees btdc and it is not overheating anymore holding around 185, need to get a shroud and add another fan on the front of the radiator though when it sits for a while it climbs to around 195 and drops slowly. When you drive it doesn't get past 185. Has anyone installed a pertronix ignitor II conversion kit in their distributor. I know the timing will probably have to be adjusted again, but the directions say to leave everything where it was on the distributor as far as the position the rotor was in.
