changing head gaskets on a 1970 440
Looks like the head gaskets on my 71 barracuda need changed. Car was loosing coolant and now it just trickling out of back left side of motor. I've never done head gaskets before. Not sure if I'm going to do myself. Anyone have any links-info on this. Has the 6-pack set up which makes it harder I'm sure.
Thanks

Gasket change
Hope this helps a little.. I just had the heads off my 383 hp. I removed intake with carb setup as one unit. Save some time off an back on. A six pack should do the same I would think. Hook ups between carbs would remain but fuel lines obviously wouldn't. Throttle linkage must come off too. That made the head removal easier. Wouldn't be surprised if something else there that I'm not aware about too.
Also, a thought on rockers, once you pull valve covers, those should come off. Depending on type, adjustable or not, if they are adjustable, they need to go back and be adjusted. So if your not sure about that, maybe have someone who is.. I wasn't at first but a couple good friends walked me through it and it's tedious but easy to learn..
Make sure if you do yourself you remove head bolts in correct order and bolt back on in correct order. I will post pics of sequence later if you need. Torque to 70 ft/lbs
Hope helps..

Tip: pick up a small "disposable" shop vac for sucking antifreeze out of the holes after you pull the heads (you can keep the vac after you use it here, it'll just smell funny). This is a pretty straight forward job, don't be intimidated. Also, the heads are heavy and you'll be leaning over a fender, have a buddy near by.

Don't forget fender covers.. Look on the side of the block IT may have a pipe plug for coolant drainage Unhook the coolant hoses first I have a big cement mixing tub fits under the car was $15 Home Depot get that cleaned up first. Not good slipping on antifreeze. Take a look at the freeze plugs too, may be time to replace them and flush the block. Next remove the exhaust. then you might consider taking the wheels off and lowering it down on blocks for easier access
