distributor problem! i need help

i have put a 69, 383bb in my 82 dodge short bed, went to put the distributor in and it wont go all the way down? the gear it sits in is down and turns fine, but it still stays about a half inch up off the block, has anyone run into this problem?

So you can see the distributor gear seated all the way into the gear on the end of the camshaft?

If so are you sure you have a big block distribuitor?

did it come out of that motor?

It sounds like you have a 440 distributor in a 383
The shaft is about 1/2" longer for the RB block.

Found this on the www

Mopar B engine – 3.5″
Mopar RB engine – 4″

MAKE SURE you don't have a small block dist. They rotate CW, B/ RB rotate CCW. To tell easily, just "spring" the rotor. You will have to "push" the spring the same direction it rotates.

On at least a few of these "laying about" can't you look up the dist. number to find out?

The thing is, the gear might be "all the way down," but you might NOT have the bushing all the way down
