Engine Dodge Coronet 1974... Help!
Hey All!
Greetings from Norway.
I have a "dumb" question for ya all.. I have a 1974 Dodge Coronet. Which I want to replace the engine and the transmission. I am thinking about fitting maybe a newer modell HEMI engine in it.. Thats just a thought..
My question is, what type/make of engines will fit my car without any major rebuilds? What motor will fit?
My thought is to just rip the old one out, and get the new one in without a major rebuild..
I am greatful for all answers I get, I am not so experienced in MOPAR cars so maybe someone can help me...

You're talking about a 4 door Coronet, right?
The Coronet was the "family" oriented "B" body and while you probably could get a new hemi to fit and function, it's still a 4 door car.
One of my neighbors had one when I got my Charger back in the 70's. He really did a lot of work on it, ending just a little shy of totally pimping it out. No matter what he did, it was still a 4 door family car.
Everybody's tastes are different, but trying to turn that into a hot rod just doesn't seem quite right.
If you're set on doing it, look into Schumacher Racing for conversion motor mounts, etc.

Yes it is a 4 door "family" car..
The reason i kept it is because these cars dont come by very often in Norway, I think there is maybe 3-4 in the entire country.. So that is why iI want to keep it.. (In U:S i guess these cars are pretty common?)
If I am correct its got a 360 engine in it now, and you now its old, and does not have so much power.. I want to have a really powerful engine (about 400-500 hp)
So I am looking for an engine that would fit without doing a major rebuild.
So what is your best proposal?

Value wise, if the car is anywhere near original, I'd go the restoration route. You can redo the 360 and easily get 400 HP, while keeping the stock look. Finding a 400 would be period correct, even if your car didn't originally come with that and can be turned into a real beast - and one heck of a sleeper.
The only downside is that, a new engine, like one of the Hemis will have better starting and driving manors than the older period correct ones.
Also understand, if you go high enough in HP, you're also looking at drive train, frame and suspension mods.
Ultimately, it has to be your call as to what you want to do with it and what you want to get out of it.

What mods are we talking about with the 360.. How much power can I get out of the 360.. ? It would be the easiest to mod the 360 as the engine already fits the car.. The car is not in original state, it will never be either.. Its cool and rare
PK1- Not much engines to choose from in Norway you see...
Thanks for all the good replies guys appriciate it

And can also somebody give me a link or tell me the history of the dodge coronet.. I have heard that the car is basically a 4 door charger? .. As I look on pictures on the web, it has some similarities to the Charger...

If it's a 74 360, it will be relatively low compression. That may not be a bad thing, if you're using pump gas.
If the motor is sound, you're looking at the usual stuff carburetor/intake, cam and exhaust (headers and duals out the back). You might want to consider new heads as well. The electronic ignition system that came on the 74's was fine, but you can always upgrade the box and/or distributor later.
Been a while since I worked on a small block, but there are guys here who can give you detailed parts lists for the stuff I mentioned.
The frame (unibody) is the same as the same year Chargers, the body panels and interior were modified to be more family friendly. Overall length was shorter.

If it is a 360? It probably has a 727 trans --Good trans... Surface the heads-- .030 .050 . to raise the compression some...Clean the heads up, mild porting, cut the valve guides for PC seals New cam & lifters something around 276-280 w/ 480 lift with a set of 1.6 roller rockers
For the intake ? You could use the factory 4bbl thermoquad manifold & carb. OR use an adapter with a Edelbrock or Holley carb 650cfm / 750cfm max, headers
400+hp is doable
Problem is most parts will have to be bought in the USA and shipped, makes them expensive

Can anybody direct me to a webpage that sells parts for these engines..
Also i need a new frontwindow, interior carpet and a new ceiling.. anybody now any good webpages? Other then Ebay... Who ships foreign...
My guess is that maybe The 74Charger frontwindow might fit.. but not certain about that....
