Exhaust damaged by rust

Hi there,

I recently bought a 1972 Polara 400 and today the exhaust pipe / muffler detached itself from the main pipe, where they are usually bolted together, because of heavy rust that rotted the metal.

I was wondering if you guys know what am I looking at in expenses to replace the exhaust system / pipes, as the whole thing is badly rusted, and I'm assuming the rest of the exhaust system is probably rusted too.

Thank you!

It depends if you are going to do the work or if you are going to have a local shop do the work.

If you do it, then it's just the cost of the parts which all depends on what you want to replace what you have with.

If you have a shop do it, it will cost more. Around here shops are charging $65-$85 and hour and that is just the "hole in the wall" shops. Exhaust shops are getting the higher end of that if not more.

Two years ago, I had a new custom header flange to exhaust tip system with x-pipe done for about $500 (Old muffs were good and new ones might cost you a couple $150 - 200 more for a pair of good ones). Gotta figure your neck of the woods should be about the same. As Tim said, it can be a lot less if you do it yourself. Only tricky part is if the pieces don't quite fit.

I am thinking that you are not going to find the correct parts, unless you go with something like TTI but they are very spendy:broke:and need headers or the proper H.P manifolds.
Your probably gonna have to find a shop and get a custome system done.
As you are asking about price I will assume you are looking to have it done. My best advice would be to shop around and talk to folks in your area to find the best place. Given todays prices, $500.oo including mufflers would be average. $1000.oo :eek:would be crazy. No need to spend over a hunert bucks for a pair of muffs. Striaght pipes in a small diameter would be quiet enough for cruizing, very agressive when you stomp it...:D Big car would not need big pipes for street use with a low Compression 400. You want torque not high rpm horse power.
1 7/8"ths is getting big for a cruizer. An X pipe would help kill the drone that drives folks nuts, and make sure the pipes exit behind the bumper.

I really appreciate your suggestions and sharing you knowledge.

Yu guys were right on target, I went to a shop this morning and they quoted the whole exhaust system completely rebuilt for $450-500.

Thank you very much!

I will post some photos of the car when I get it back :) very happy to have found this place!

$450-$500 is actually a reasonable price. Can't wait to see it.
