Fuel sending unit question

How hard is it to replace the fuel sending unit in a 66 Coronet. Thanks

there is a metal locking ring holding the unit into the tank I use a dull chisel and hammer to work it loose. With it twisted out you remove the sending unit then take the new unit with its new oring gasket install making sure it's pointed the right way and install the metal keeper into the tank using the dull chisel to tighten it.

However before you go that route. If your fuel guage is not working correctly these tanks are not grounded. The ground was a strap that clipped to the fuel line above the hose and then to the metal of the tube on the sending unit. I use a piece of wire and some clamps to do the same job which usually fixes the gas guage problem. The tanks on these cars have a insulator between the tank and trunk floor and the same material on the holding straps that prevents a ground on the tank.

So true ! And if you need to change it the easiest way is to drop the tank. NOT much room to work

Thanks for the tips. My factory gauge does not work but I was going to install a Auto Meter Phantom fuel gauge to match my other Phantom gauges. Was wanting to know what I was in for if I have to replace my sending unit because it's bad or the ohms of the original don't match my aftermarket gauge. It also don't look like the tank would be that hard to drop. Thanks again.

Went out and took a look at the tank and found that when the car was restored they had replaced the metal fuel line with rubber all the way to the fender. There is no ground strap on it. That's the problem right there. Thanks

Better get rid of that trash.
