Holley vs. Proform

Gents -

This has probably been discussed already, but what are your thoughts on Holley carbs and replacement parts vs. the Proform stuff? My local Speed Shop is really pushing the Proform stuff as being cheaper and "better engineered".

The weight difference between the two carbs is significant, but the lighter Proforms just look "cheaper" with the plating and purple throttle plate/metering blocks.

(My current Holley 850 is over 35 years old and seems to be holding up quite well. Any reason to consider and "upgrade" - performance or maintain wise?)

Thanks

Archer

Good question. Are the Proform have adjustable air-bleeds and stuff in their metering blocks?

Scott -

I believe they do.

That's my argument. Since I haven't raced in decades, spending something like $600 has to give me a seat of the pants difference, either in performance or drive-ability. The old Holley is holding up pretty well, was just wondering in "new and improved" really is. (It usually isn't, in my experience.)

I'm just saying that some of the newer carbs have things like adjustable air-bleeds and things like that. In the day, you would have to plug them, then redrill the size you wanted. For me, I am ready to chuck the whole carby thing and go with F.I. The present goal for the 512 stroker is billet 1000cfm throttle body with the throttle position sensor, O2 sensors in the headers, crank and cam position sensor, weld injector bungs into a victor single plane intake. Control it with a Mega-Squirt EFI controller using open-source software. Tuned by my laptop. I'm just an old biker, but tech dont scare me.

Holley vs Proform

Breereric I bought an 850 street proform from Summit this past winter for $400 that looks identical to your Holley. Works great no complaints.I run it in the winter because it has a choke, in the summer I run a 950 race proform, which also works flawlessly. The motor that they sit on top of is a 515 stroker. I'm a believer in Proform carbs.
