Idle timing on 383

Hey guys,

Just curious if you have any suggestions on where to start with timing at idle on my 383. I will be running manifold vacuum on the distributor advance.

Edelbrock e street heads
Holley 670 street avenger
Tti headers
Comp cams 268/268 454 454 cam

Thanks for the info!

And why are you running manifold vacuum to the distributor?
It's usually set up to use a ported vacuum.

Most of those engines like to start about 10 initial advanced, and tune from there.

Start at 10 with the vacuum disconnected.

Some people believe in man. vacuum and some don't. I'm in the "dont't" camp, but whatever you do you will HAVE to either run a performance distributor in which you can shorten the advance curve, or else re-curve the factory dist. Hotter cams need more initial timing. 15-20 is not unheard of, and the reason you cannot just "jack that up" is now it will OVER advance at higher RPM unless recurved.

I run about 14 degrees with mine using a "mild" Lunati cam with the advance hose removed and plugged.

Thanks everyone.

Gotta do some test and tune time. Car pulls awesome once moving but falls flat on its face sometimes even stalls if I hammer it from a stand still
