Irritating Find Today
1 Attachment(s)
Well looks like all the work was a waste, I found and small hairline crack on the passenger side head by the number 6 cylinder bolt hole. Doesn't go into the bolt hole but I am sure if I run it again it will just damage stuff further. Found it because of some oil I found in the valley pan and figured it was due to the pan not being sealed right, Took the intake off and looked closer while cleaning up the heads and I noticed it, I looked at some pictures I took while doing the cam, I am pretty sure it was there but on the bottom, the pictures aren't as clear as this one but take a look. I am pissed off I guess the car getting to 230 during break in was too much for the car to handle. Never had a problem with anything before the upgrade, guess I have to find some heads now, not going to spend $1200 on aluminum ones I will try to find cast iron ones in good shape. Seen some pairs for around $400. My 383 is once again down.

That Sucks.....

bummer dude.

Yep now to find some 906 heads in good shape. Engine got too hot while breaking the cam in. 230 was too hot. I had a gut feeling about it. But when you are learning you follow the lead but nothing I can do now. Now I'll get the hardened seats and some new valves. Everything else is still in good shape. Pushrods springs lifters. Rocker arms and shaft nothing else is cracked. Still have to take the heads off and see if something happened to the block hopefully not .

Put a pressure test on it. Maybe it'll hold? I say run it.
|
I don't think 230 is that hot. I have overheated both my 440s more than that. It may have been a defective casting, made worse by the overheating. If you do have to replace it, you only need one head, the other one must be fine.

I will get the other head pressure tested and get hardened seats as well in both. There are some odd casting marks on the one that is cracked, there is a weird mark towards the front looks like a crack but it is a casting mark, who knows it might have cracked in that spot as well. I found some here I guess they are new or reman, I will have to call up tomorrow http://www.hughesengines.com/Index/p...=&partid=11499

It's not the end of the world
|
No its not, doing the cam was more of a pain at least that survived could be worse, not much to take of took me 15 minutes to take off the carb intake linkages etc, just have to take the heads off now.
|
That damage would likely be caused by the wrong bolt ? Too long !
|
Might have been too short I have the rpm performer intake I now have the longer bolts but too late for that now.
