oil burn
 

have a dodge dart swinger 1971 with rebuilt 318 little over 1500 miles on engine. Problem it takes 1 qt oil every 300 or so miles. seems like i had this problem from day 1. thought after break in would get better. Lack of power also is noticed with engine miss in mid rpm range. never gauged the rpm. Compression test good for all cylinders. 120-123. Did leak down test all about 3-5% on cold engine. Know it should be warm though. Noticed 3 plugs had oil deposits on them rest seemed ok. Once clean up plugs car runs better then plugs foul up again. Thinking maybe oil rings but see no smoke out exhaust when following car. Do have white smoke when first start. Also have knock when 1st start then 3 sec later gone. engine is at full mark with oil, not low. Any ideas would be appreciated.

The oil smoke on start-up is a good sign of valve guide seals. That is a lot of oil just for valve seals though. It may be worth a try to replace the seals and see if that does it.

I would first look at the valve seals on the three holes that are fouling plugs, as far as the start up try a better or deferent brand of oil filter.

will check valve seals but thought leak down would have shown that. No leakage thru carb or exhaust. THanks for response

Valve seals Or possibly you used the wrong intake gaskets

No would not show on leak down... All the valves are closed......
Im with the guys......
If the heads were done and are in good order.... Attack the intake for not sealing on the valley side.....

Took off valve covers and 6 and 5 rocker were loose. Going to replace lifters. Had a nasty tap after doing the leak down. Hopefully this will fix problem. Will also be checking seals. Thanks for responses.
