SB HEAD HELP
Hey guys I am seeking some help/advice with my build.
I purchased a strong running low mile 1987 318 two barrel that i removed from a fifth avenue for $100. My plan is to put it in a 1937 chevy truck with 4 speed and 8 3/4. I have a wieand tunnel ram and a few other performance parts i am going to put on it. I am seeking a better set of heads and have heard lots of rumors as to what to look for at the junk yard. Should I look for 360 heads? Certain year 318 heads? What year vehicle should I be looking for to obtain these heads? Also what size cam should I run? Thanks guys! |
Pull off the valve cover and read the casting number, if last 3 digits are 302 be very happy. These are the "swirl port" closed chamber heads. If you put 1.88+ 1.60" valves in with a higher compression height piston you can raise compression have quench and push these to 300-350 HP. With full performance port work and a 1.92" valve 350 HP +.
If you look at a 360 head you'll see open chambers with less compression potential unless you have them milled .050-.060". |
if i dont have those, what year sb should i be looking for? thanks!

I would seriously consider the LA X heads. I like cast iron. Stay away from the 2.02" valves with the small bore. Think about useing 360 rods as the 318's are quite puny.

Success they are the 302 heads! I am excited to build this. I just ordered a cam/lifter set. Bought rocker arms and a distributor. Tunnel ram and carbs are ready to be bolted on. Any advice?
