It can be done... It's just not a direct swap out / Bolt in...

It would be easier to swap the whole frame.

If you have manual locking hubs then there is really no need to swap the axle because when not locked the wheels spin free from the internals so there is not the extra resistance of turning the gears. The question then becomes the transmission, is there a benefit for him to swap out the transmission to the 2wd version? Do the trans mounts match up? What is messed up on the 4 wheel drive?

This is an older thread but I will weigh in. The frame rails are the same but the cross members are different. The parts are riveted in place and have to be cut out, new holes drilled and bolted back together. I did the opposite building a 4x4 from a 2wd. It is a fun project but you will want a complete chassis to locate everything. I bought a wrecked w250 with a bent frame and transferred everything to my d150 20 years ago and am still using it.

4x4 vs 2x4

Why?! Fix the 4wd...2wd is useless in snow and off road. I don't even look at 2wd anymore. Fix what you got and learn from it and leave everyone else stuck in your dust! LMAO
