8 3/4 axle install

So I pulled my rear end out of my car and pulled my axles swapped in a new lsd with 3.23 gears and got the center section back in.

Now the fun begins when I put my drivers side axle back in and went to put the passenger side in and a little piece fell off. After some research I found it out to be an "axle adjuster lock." I honestly have no idea where it goes back on let alone how to put it on and set it up. any and all help is apreciated and pictures of where it goes would be fantastic as I can not find any.

Thanks,

Gary

I'm not an expert on the "modernized" 8 3/4. By that I mean many guys use what they call "green" bearings which converts the axle to NOT using the factory tapered bearings, and rather, uses ball bearings which need no thrust adjustment and do not need to be grease packed. My understanding is, that depending on axle length, there might be a thrust button issue in the 3rd member, so you need to research that and check it out.

ORIGINAL axle setups, however, all had a "thrust button" in the third member, and the axles are made to exacting lengths. Once side of the car has a conventional bearing bearing retainer, which simply bolts in, the two axles push against the thrust block in the third member, and the opposite side axle has an ADJUSTMENT on the bearing retainer so that this axle end thrust can be adjusted

It is EXTREMELY important to read the factory shop manual in these cases, because the original bearings MUST BE packed with the proper lube. They are not sealed, and they are NOT lubed from the 90wt in the center of the axle. They use an inner and outer wheel seal which isolates the bearings.

These original bearings are TAPERED just like wheel bearings and MUST be adjusted for the proper THRUST. So the one axle, evidently the one you are asking about, has a screw adjustment on the axle retainer, and after you make this adjustment, the "lock" I'm assuming you are describing goes into one of the adjustment nut slots to lock it.

Go over here to MyMopar and download the 70 Plymouth manual for free. Unfortunately the page numbers in your browser are consecutive, rather than the proper "dash" system, so you must play with page numbers

For one that is easier to navigate, and has much of the same mechanical "stuff," you can go here and download this:

70 Dart/ Challenger

In the above manual, 8 3/4 stuff is page 3-14

and occasionally handy is 70-71 Mopar parts

Unfortunately, the lock is not shown here, but this is the axle which uses it

440roadrunner you are officially my hero!

I can not thank you enough for that post!

from reading those articles I have been able to get everything seated in there properly and the lock in place.

Now in reading those it also says if I have understood correct that the drivers side axle should end up with 0 play and the passenger side with the adjustor should end up with .013-.023...... I do not have the proper guage to test this and it seems as if there is 0 play on both sides.....

I dont recal play before at all and I did not actually spin the adjustor at all.

Thank you again!!!!

The little piece is probably the adjustor lock- goes under the axle bolt. New seals & gaskets? can change things Start by loosing the threaded adjuster until you have play. Then adjust it. Something around the thickness of a dime or slightly less
