Talking BIG TIME SWAP

Hi all
This is a long planed swap.
1986 Chrysler 5th. ave. M-body; 318, 518 4re with lockup converter 3.91 ,8 1/4 rear.
I have all the parts now to start the mod:
518 fresh rebuild with a ATC reprogramming kit, 2000 factory stall/lockup converter.
8 1/4 3.91 open rear end.
This will be a very important update to this planed combo,pictures will follow for future reference with my narration.
This is my second swap but this is by far harder than the first, as i progress i hope your input will be helpful hoping to do this in a few days / any machine work /drive shaft length pending, 24 hrs. "Central Florida Drive Line", used them for years. :think

Sounds good with maybe exception of the stock converter ?? Any engine mods planed ?

Aren't you going to have to runs some electronics to shift it into overdrive and lock up the torque convertor. I have the same tranny and rear in my Shelby Dakota.

You can use a series of hydrolic pressure switches or manual switches with the earlier 90's trans

I've used manual switches through relays on my first swap, the tork converter im seeking to use is a 2000 rpm stall, i've used this before with my diplomat, 10yrs or so ago works fine for the street this is a factory stall the Mopar engineers new what they were doing!
The engine combo i have now should see big gains with this drive line,

The switches and relays i can get at a local surplus supplier "Sky Craft" tons of electronics, resistors, switches, motors.... man you got to see this place to appreciate it.
The engine is modded:
1986 318 LA. roller block
Nice set of ported 360 heads/family secret.
comp cams: dual energy, Dual Energy™, 275DEH
High Performance Street, Choppy Idle
Part Number: 20-418-3
Edelbrock induction:
Edelbrock:7501 - Edelbrock Performer RPM Air-Gap Intake Manifold ,

Ok located a high stall lock up from local trans depot supplier, "consolidated transmissions" 2000 stall/lockup $89.00 + core
this is a picture of the 360 converter from my first mod you can see the weight compared too the 318
internal vs external balanced...
also the supplier said this additive was beneficial to the 518 or 46re.

Here are some pictures of the trany did some initial inspection after she's been sitting for a few years no obvious damage going too pick up the tork converter today.

Hey all...
this Tuesday i'm going to swap the rear end for the 8 1\4 3.91
after i check out the 7 1/14 2.72 will probably barter it...see wat happens.
According to the numbers i got the 7 1/4 is 10.09 inches center too yoke where the 8 1/4 is 11. 69 leaving me a 1.60 diff the drive shaft has 2 " of travel in it so im able to use it, but the trans is going to need three inches of the drive shaft removed when installed.
the rear end swap is easy the hardest part is the massive rowing work out you get with the 1/2 drive, long handle ratchet,
new brakes and wheel cylinders thinking on new shocks my left rear air shock wont hold air any more but no big deal she handles better with the tail down besides i mainly used them to level a load.

Ok its Tuesday morning and i'm out to the yard to swap the rear axle

Ok its 4:16 in the afternoon and the rear end is in 3.91
not too bad of a job the U BOLTS where not as bad as i was expecting, it was pretty much a straight swap, the drive shaft was re-usable.
New brakes and wheel cylinders.
Took her for a test ride ooohyea i think shes down in the mid 13s high 12s got to get to the drag strip.

The rear end swap has worked out fine.
Making some finals plans for the trany swap, i have to cut the floor at the cross member where the trany mount attaches to the chassis i
found a post on the Farley diplomat page where some one did this; he over did the cut from the begging he cut out almost the entire trany tunnel.
Then he had to weld it back in i learned a lot from his photos what not to do...
my plan is to make the minimal cut around the cross member and lift the 518 into place align it to the pinion
and fabricate the new upper cross over, the trany mount and existing cross member i will try to modify, the rubber mount will have to be replaced with a different type.
Im heading over to the local electronics surplus store for micro switches and relays i have a b&m T handle shifter with the built in switch might use that for the lock up also got to stop by local junk yard and get the wire harness that plugs into the od/lu plug on the trany

PATC 727 to 518 Deluxe Conversion Kit
#727518DK. This is the fully electronic no vacuum needed deluxe kit for the 727 to 518 swap. Made for diesels without vacuum and big cam gas motors with low vacuum. Comes with two governor speed sensors, throttle position sensor, electronic control unit, carburetor bracket and a shift solenoid pigtail. It is 80% pre-wired. What this kit does is makes a 518 transmission shift without a computer. Can be made for a non-lock-up torque converter for $18.00 less. Cost $325.00

Alright Sunday afternoon i re curve my dizzy,i was running a dual curve spring combo orange/purple i'm going to switch to a more aggressive single curve grey/grey.
When my old mopar ignition was failing "old parts " i swapped for a plug and play type frist brand was pertronixs well i didnt have too much luck with there dizzys 1 st failed on initial start up, second failed after two months, third failed month after that,
summit was very understanding!
i finally took my brothers advice and went to Mallory ss electronic pick up with the recommended coil.
i start buy removing the dizzy from the vehicle, then remove the wires from the plug this is tricky u got to push back the small tabs on the pins i use a micro driver.
Then pull them through the rubber bushing be careful not to pull on the pin splice.
A needle nose pliers helps me get these through the bushing, after removing the bushing and loosening the set screws for the pick up plate it comes out and at the bottom are the springs and weights.
Trading purple and pink for grey and grey i use small driver to remove and install springs.
installation is simple just be careful with the wires pulling them through the bushing i install the vacuum advance first to align the pick up plate, then tighten the set screws and then back to the car for install easy install; love those old school mopar engineers,
i set the timing and fired her up and woohoo nice test drive
P.S one trick i use to check the accuracy of the ignition timing is on the terminals you can see the wear on the pick ups.

Today i'm making final perpetration for the swap which will probably happen tomorrow and proceeding days:
remove 727,
cut floor install 518,
weld in new top brace,
and send out the drive shaft for modification.
i think i can modify the existing lower cross member to support the 518,
the trick is what type of rubber mount to use between the cross member and trany?
All of the raw materials for the swap we have on hand so the cost of the swap is minimal.

Today's the day out to swap the trany.
i found a trany mount for 96-2000 ram truck's got a picture looks like it will work fine, will check it out ,made the wire harness since i cant locate a plug for the overdrive and lock up converter.
OK lots to do pictures will follow wish me luck all.

Boy what a day its hard installing a 518 by your self, but its in two lower bolts installed i'm tired and sore! check out the hole i cut in the floor not to big at all.
While i make another rum and pepsi...:drinking:

Tomorrow i drop off the drive shaft for shortining and rebuild/balance at, "advanced drive line " then pickup the trany mount for a 2000 ram pick-up and also need to change out the cooler lines, and head back and finish hooking up the trans then fabricate the upper crossover out of 1"x2"c channel and modify the lower mount to accept the new mount/location re-install new floor, then hook up the relays and switches, and....
Then have a few German bier's. :drinking:
And then head out to the strip for et's. :driving:

Looking good my bro. And Im right there with ya on the sore thing. first time I dropped a turbo 350 out of a camaro I had (twenty years ago!!), thing came down and landed on my chest oouuccchhh. (I found out just how heavy those things were.) I put a 4-speed munci tranny in it...could melt the tires off in first and second, and catch a good chirp in third...good times man...

Didn't do too much work on her today finished hooking up the trany i dropped off the drive shaft and the tech showed me it was bent hmm...
That explains it, then he asked me what is this in what kind of power he said that's why its bent the tube wall is not thick enough so he's going to build me a new one that will handle the power total cost $210.00.
Then i headed over to the parts store to find a trany mount, the truck mount was to wide couldn't use it on this set up, the chevey mount was the closest, i have to widen the distance be tween the bolt slots about 1/4 inch, and i started cutting the c channel for the cross over.

man those 518 s are heavy im still sore i cant say i ever droped one on me though i dropped a starter on my head once that was a dumb pain full event

Yea you can say that again china, korea, no wounder our nation and the western economy is on the verge of collapsing we don't manufacture enough here, and they did it to us for their profit..
