Charger transmission swap.

Hi, I have a 1973 charger with a 318 and 904. I have a 440/727 for it out of an old RV. My question is: is it possible to use the nv3500s out of a ram or is it just easier and more cost effective to use a TKO? Im not really familiar with any others so any suggestions will be great. I'd like a 5 spd and not a 4 unless i can convert it to a 5 OD. Second question is will the 9.25 fit in a B-body? if not then I'll hunt down an 8 3/4 any advice will be awesome and thanks for your time

Check into Mopar Action magazine June 2012 for the skinny on the 9 1/4. As far as the trans goes, it's my understanding that the NV 3500 is geared for trucks and is undesirable for pass cars. Look into Passon Performance, they recently released a 5 speed that bolts in to 4 speed cars. Good luck, bud.

thanks for the links I'll look into it. im trying to be budget minded so Im looking to get what i can on the cheap. I have a 2000 dodge with A LSD 9.25 if I can use it I will

Truck has 6 bolt wheels, the trans will work sort of but you won't like the results with a very low 1th gear, shifter position. Check into one of the aftermarket 5 or 6 speed transmissions OR you could (cough) look for something from a GM to adapt

I have a 9 1/4 rear in my 74 charger. You may need to modify the drive shaft length and have to check the axle length. Mine was for that body type.

Can't help ya with the tranny.

Thanks archer. how much did you have to modify the drive shaft and axles?

I think I might go with a TKO 600 anyone have any personal experience with them? it'll be an auto to manual conversion so i'll be cutting anyways. Any opinions?

As I said, the rear was made for a B-body, so the axle length wasn't an issue, you seem to be doing a transplant.

The drive shaft had to be lengthened a few inches (new shaft) for proper front spline engagement. That's going from a 318 to a 440 with respective 727s.

Years ago, we made the swap from an 8 3/4 to a 9 1/4 in my buddies '72 440 Magnum Charger. He and I 'went halves' on a '76 Dodge Monaco Police Issue patrol car with a 440 and he got the complete rear end.
The swap was easy and a simple bolt in...
I put the Charger's Sure Grip differential (3rd member) in my '68 Fury the same day and all 3 of the driveshafts were identical lengths.

Looks like i'll pull a 9.25 from a ram. they're much easier to find.
