Gears change nightmare

3 Attachment(s)
I'm doing a gears change on my '74 fury but is starting to be a real nightmare!

According to the differential cover bolt pattern my axle is an 8.25 but I'm starting to think that maybe isn't due to so much problems

https://moparforums.com/forums/attac...1&d=1464560467

The stock gears were 2.83 (i think...) and the new gears are 3.55, the new pinion and gear are a kit sold by Richmond Gear Excel and the installation kit is a Motive Gear super kit.

The pinion and gear are successfully installed but now I've a problem with my carrier bearings, apparently the new bearings doesn't fit in my axle housing (see second image attached), I checked the list parts of the installation kit and everything is correct, the bearings part numbers are correct so I don't know why them doesn't fit

The second problem is that one of the adjusters in my axle is broken (see third attached image), I mean, when I disassembled the unit it fell broken in my hand. Is it easy to find? can I buy one or will be needed to buy a pair?

Axle Details
The Chrysler 8.25" axle is found in many Dodge and Jeep vehicles and comes in several different configurations. The 2005 and new Chrysler 8.25" axle features larger 29 spline axle shafts and uses metric ring gear bolts. All other models have 27 spline axle shafts. The easiest way to identify the axle is to check for 10 cover bolts, an oval shaped cover, and a fill plug just below the centerline. You might also be able to find the ID tag wrapped around the passenger side axle tube with the axle ID and gear ratio listed on it.

Going from a 2.83 to a 3.55 May ?? require a new ring gear carrier

josehf34 Jun 13, 2016 10:33 PM

I finished this job the past week, my rear end is a chrysler 8.25 but the real problem was into the installation kit I bought

If someone is planning to do this job be careful and stay away of this kit: https://www.summitracing.com/int/par...rskt/overview/
Both carrier bearings and inner pinion bearing are wrong for chrysler 8.25, don't waste your money!

The excel pinion and ring works great, the car response is a LOT better but I'm still a bit disappointed, my car isn't still burning rubber launching at wot in first gear :(

How did that go so wrong? Wow... That blows.... :yikes:

Just changing the gear ratio will not make it a tire burner. A 74 has a smog motor low performance engine. what size tires are you using ?

My tires are 235/60R15 and the motor isn't stock. Right now I have large tube headers, Air Gap aluminum intake, Street Demon 625CFM carb and 262H XE Comp Cams camshaft

I was loosing my mind with that problem so I took the carrier, pinion and the kit to a local shop and once the owner saw the problem went to back of the store and came back with the correct bearings. I don't know how a kit could be so wrong in so many parts!

You probably need a different torque converter 2800-3000 stall
