good rear end/transmission combo for 1969 dodge dart gt

hello everyone im new to the forum and i was just wondering what your guys suggestions were for a good rear end and tranny for a 1969 dodge dart im just running the stock 273 at the moment it has highrise intake,cam,650cfm 4bbl carb, headers, electronic ignition. one day i would like to put a 360 with a scat 408 stroker kit in it i was just looking for some suggestions on what to do with the tranny and rear end and anything else you think i should do. thanks!

My Vote is a Dana Rearend and a Linco M/T Trans...Put a Hemi in it. :)

'69 dodge dart.

If it has a 7 1/4 rear end with the 273 it'd be fine. Go to a 408 stroker you should have no less than an 8 1/4 out of 73 and later 340 or 360 dusters or dart sports. They are A-bodies like your dart. The best one would be an 8 3/4 out of an A-body Mopar. Transmission wise, your 273 probably has the 904 Torque Flite. If that hadn't been rebuilt yet, I'd get it rebuilt about the time you are ready for the engine upgrade with heavy duty internals and a shift kit. If you are going to drag race it, with a rebuild and shift kit and extra transmission cooler it's lighter than the A-727 and low gear is a little lower than the A-727. Unless you do a lot of neutral drop starts, the 904 isn't that bad of a tranny. Especially in the lighter dart and weight range.

thanks for the info guys i wasn't sure if the 904 could take that much abuse and one day i hope to put a hemi in it but they aint cheap haha i was thinking about a fuel injected 5.7 out of a newer truck but i want to keep it carbed. and i was looking at rear ends and a moser 8 3/4 is fairly cheap but if i can find a used one out of another a body ill for sure buy it

Never done it but I understand the small block trans will fit the new Hemi... So I would put a 727 in it. with a 3.55 gear in an 8 3/4 from a 70?72 dart,Duster.Valiant,Demon..
so as to get the 4 1/2" bolt pattern

That's what I hear. I have a Linc Versaille Ford 9" under my 67, factory rear disk brakes

To the OP

Use your head and "get real."

What do I mean "get real?"

I mean, sit down, do some thinking, and REALLY consider what you WANT and what you can AFFORD

DO YOU really want a hemi? Can you really AFFORD a hemi? You have 20K? Well you better!!!!

So now that we are down off that cloud, let's talk about options.........

Just how much power can you afford?

What I'm saying here is, "Dana's are nice" 'n all that but you don' need 'em in a light Dart with say, only 400 hp or less. Hell the factory used 8 3/4s behind the 64 hemis they didn't HAVE Danas back then!!! Dana's didn't come out until 66 or 7 and even THEN they only came in 4 speed cars

WHAT I DON'T LIKE about a Dana, or any other "rear cover" axle:

You cannot freekin change the gears easily!!!! Even at my old arthritic age of 66, I can still manage (on my hoist) to get the punkin in / out of the Ferd axle in an afternoon.

WHY is this important?

The way I operate, it's VERY important. Example..........everything about my car is used, some of it more used than other. So I have a "better" set of gears, "quieter" and (in my mind) a better ratio. I get a kit for the limited slip from the www. I tear the punkin apart. I get it all ready. I take my time. ALL THIS TIME I'm still drivin' the car with the "other" punkin in . Then one nice afternoon, I throw the car on the hoist, swap punkins, and BAMB!!!! it's all over with, jus' like dat!!!

So I didn' ha' de' dam' ca' all jak' up 'p a weee' gitten 'da a'k'l fik'
