Newbie 2 Dodge interchange
Starting into 1 generation Dodge's at 60 y/o
I just bought a 1977 Dodge W200 4X4 with weak 318 motor and auto transmission.
Can I take a 1972 Dodge 1 ton 360 with auto trans 2WD and direct fit onto my transfer case?

The 360 yes, the transmission no the output shaft and tailshaft is different from the 2wd to 4wd.

Yes, One other suggestion.... Bring the Torque Converter with the engine or at least look at it... Some of those converters have weights on them for balancing and some are different sizes.

360 will swap out to you 4x4 transmission with out issue. But you cant use the 318 torque convertor. you have to use the 360 torque matted to your old trans.

Ok.I found a thread elsewhere.
To convert a 2WD 727 to a 4WD, you must disassemble both transmissions completely. The tailshaft must be swapped and it's the last thing out the front of the transmission on disassembly. Naturally the 2WD tail housing will have to be swapped for the transfer case adaptor. It's important to note that the 727 that mate to the NP203 will not mate to any other transfer case.

I work on these trucks on my back in a rocky yard.No shop.A poor man has poor ways.I dislike taking these old trucks to the scrap yard.Paying someone else to rebuild current trans is $3000 plus and would still have a used up motor.Oh well.

I've done the 4wd swap, if I'd had more time this morning I would have elaborated. But it just makes sence to rebuild the 4wd transmission and sell the 2wd transmission. Perhaps you could pull the transmission from the truck and have it rebuilt, this should happen for less than a $1000.

I used to do these trucks for a living many years ago.
I just can't remember what fits what.
