Rebuilt tranny doesn't work.

$1000 and seven weeks later, my mechanic (a "friend" at that) completely screwed me. After seven weeks I finally demand my truck back. He rebuilt the transmission. At first it seemed to shift ok but wouldn't go into 4th (overdrive). Then it just started shifting early and it sputtered the whole way home. I asked the mechanic about it and he said "My rebuild job is done and done right. Your problem is electrical and you probably need a fuel filter (whatever that has to do with it). Not my problem" Nice! This was a friend that I didn't know got caught up in drugs till it was too late. I'm screwed without my truck as my life crumbles around me. He took all I had and I can't really afford any new repair bills over $150-$200 cause I've been out of work due to this. It's a 1991 Dodge Dakota V8 4x4 and I believe it has a 45rh transmission. I know he definitely rebuilt it and he does know what he's doing but just didn't care to have it in good working order. Like I said it shifts early and no overdrive. Any suggestions would be greatly GREATLY appreciated. I'm desperate. Thank you.

Sorry to hear about your issue Jimmy. My knee-jerk reaction is to say try a salvage or junk yard for that rear-end and beg and plead with them to get it for a low low price. Don't have the same (friend) help with the installation though.

Frankly he may be right about one or two things. I doubt that "sputtering the whole way home" is related to the transmission.

But that is so general that could be a LOT of things, including the fuel filter.

How long was this pickup "down?" Did it sit a year? Might be the fuel has gummed up the system. You MAY need not only a filter, but might need the injectors cleaned.

So far as the transmission, can you "work around" it, at least temporarily? Can you, example, MANUALLY shift the thing (you say it shifts early)

Can't you do without overdrive, at least temporarily?

That is, concentrate on getting the engine to run and run right

Have you checked for codes ? It could be in a fail safe mode which would not allow ovwerdrive
