Torqueflite 727 - Agressive shift and strange noise

Hi !

Today I get back my car from some brake work and I noticed some problems.

Due to poor engine performance I must shift from Drive to first gear if I want a decent performance but when I shift to second gear from first gear my transmission makes a noise like a blow and when it shifts it feels like a aggressive shifting not the soft shift.

I check the fluid level and is good but I have never change it.

What could be the problem?

YOU have been playing with the carb !! I would bet the throttle pressure to the trans is way out of adjustment !!!!

Well without a year ,make or model. I can try to help...Why does it have poor engine performance??? Did it run poorly before the brakes were done???Why do you have to manually shift the car????It sounds like the shop where you had your brakes done took your car out for a test drive and put the hammer down and now the throttle valve ( on Transmission) is stuck in wide open throttle....Bill

Here's some info: The car is a 1974 Plymouth Fury with a stock 360 V8 and a stock Torqueflite 727. The brake shop took the car to three test drives under normal conditions, not hard acceleration or something like this. I must manually shift the transmission due to on this moment I have several performance problems maybe due to carburetor problems so if I need a better reaction from the car when I drive into the highway or coming out from a stop light I manually shifts to first gear. If I don't manually shift and I hit the throttle the reaction is very slow, so this is the reason of why I have to manually shift.

Apparently the performance problems is due to the carburetor jet size, the car is running too rich. Before the brakes work the car had a better performance but I make the mistake of requested the mechanic to take a look to the carb and I think he try to tune up the carb and with this increased problems

How can I know if the throttle valve is stuck?
Where is located? I think I can take a picture of it and post it in the forum

Thank you!

assuming its 2 bbl carb?

pro-tech Sep 20, 2013 09:23 AM

The rod from the carb. to the transmission shhould have a spring on it to return it to the forward position. (assuming it is still hooked up) If it is not it will make it shift very harsh... But you need to get it running better first 360 s are good running engines as a rule....Bill

I'm going to take some pictures of the kickdown linkage and post it in this topic

Today I noticed something. I think the my 727 Kickdown isn't working, If I push the throttle to the floor when I'm going at 40mph nothing happens, I dont feel the kickdown and the RPM doesn't change!

If you do not have a service manual for this car you need to GET one

That seems like a heck of a lot of money. I'd think you could get one for 50 or under, and you should be able to find them "on CD"

There are advantages to both.
